A major threat to many snake species, global reptile and amphibian sales to the pet trade is big business, prompting brokers to follow herpetological researchers to hibernation sites of certain snakes in order to sell the GPS coordinates to trackers and traders.

The number of species of snakes in North America seems to have been relatively small prior to 20 million years ago, then the number of vipers and rear-fanged species increased quickly along with most nonvenomous species. This was aided, in large part, by the expansion of North American grasslands.
