Born in 1882, a captive tortoise in Britain named Thomas died at 130 years of age after being bitten by a rat. Tu’i Malila, a turtle from Tonga Island, died at 188. Harriet, known as “Darwin’s tortoise,” who was believed to be 1 of 3 that Darwin brought from the Galapagos Islands in 1835, died on June 26, 2006 at the estimated age of 176. Topping them all, at its death in 2006 an Indian turtle named Adwaita had lived for 255 years (according to carbon dating), making it one of the longest-living vertebrates known.
